Entry Level Reining

Reining is the fastest growing equine sport today and getting started has never been easier. Both the ORHA and the NRHA offer tiered entry level classes allowing beginner riders the opportunity to compete against others with similar skill levels, gain experience and have fun.  For all entry level class, participants are NOT required to own their own horse and the horse does not need a competition licence to compete.

ORHA Entry Level Classes

Green As Grass

Riders, who has never shown in any ORHA or NRHA (other than ORHA or NRHA Short Stirrup, NRHA Green Reiner, Green as Grass Youth or Green as Grass Non-Member), may show in this class until the end of the year in which 30 points have been accumulated. ORHA Non-Pro or  ORHA Youth The rider can choose to ride with one or two hands and modified patterns, ORHA Patterns 90-93, are used.

Green As Grass – Youth

Riders must be 16 or under as at January 1 that year, who have not shown in in ORHA or NRHA classes (other than NRHA Green Reiner, ORHA or NRHA Short Stirrup or Green as Grass Non-Member), may show in this class for a maximum of two years. ORHA Youth The rider can choose to ride with one or two hands and modified patterns, ORHA Patterns 90-93, are used.

Beginner

Riders, who have  only ever shown in ORHA classes, NRHA Green Reiner or Short Stirrup (but not shown in Advanced Beginner) or  ORHA Beginner for a maximum of two years ORHA Non-Pro or  ORHA Youth The rider can choose to ride with one or two hands and NRHA patterns 1-11 are used.

Advance Beginner

Riders, who has never shown in any reining competitions except other ORHA classes, NRHA Short Stirrup or NRHA Green Reiner, may compete in this class indefinitely and, if eligible, in Ladies’/Men’s, Green Horse, Funstyle or NRHA Green Reiner the same year. ORHA Non-Pro or  ORHA Youth Riders must ride one-handed. NRHA patterns 1-11 are used.

ORHA Short Stirrup

Youth rider, age 10 or under as of January 1st of the current year, may competing in this class may compete in NRHA Short Stirrup, NRHA Youth and other ORHA classes which he/she is eligible to enter. Riders showing in NRHA Category 1 classes are not eligible for ORHA Short Stirrup class for the current year. ORHA Non-Pro or  ORHA Youth The rider can choose to ride with one or two hands and NRHA Short Stirrup patterns 14 or 15 to apply

Green Reiner 1 Less than $100 lifetime NRHA earnings, less than 25 youth points, less than 50 Green points. NRHA Associate, Youth or Non-Pro Riders can choose to ride with one or two hands as well as can choose to perform simple or flying lead changes and NRHA patterns 1-11 are used.
Green Reiner 2 Less than $100 lifetime NRHA earnings, less than 25 youth points, less than 100 Green points. NRHA Associate, Youth or Non-Pro Riders can choose to ride with one or two hands as well as can choose to perform simple or flying lead changes and NRHA patterns 1-11 are used.
NRHA Short Stirrup For youth 10 & under as of January 1 of the current year. Riders  may use a horse without the  restrictions of ownership defined  in the Youth Conditions. Not a Top Ten class and points will not count toward Rookie or Youth Rookie eligibility NRHA Youth Riders can choose to ride with one or two hands, No penalty for holding the saddle. May ride with standard reins or any type of closed  reins. NRHA patterns 14-15 are used only.
